1. Take risks
A job I loved - In 1981 , at the age of 39, I was not the only full-time job I ever had blown.
But I 'll never see again , and the next day I took a big risk and started my own company based on an unproven idea that almost everyone thought would fail : making Finanz information enzur available to people directly on their desktops . Remember, though, that was before people had desktops.
In 2001 , when I wondered if they run for mayor , most people advised me against it. They all were afraid I would fail . But one person said : " If you imagine what a concession speech , then why not go for it? " That's the best advice I got was - and I followed him .
And you must have the courage to go for it anyway - To be successful , you must be willing to fail .
2. Make your own luck
Whatever you choose, even if it is not the job of your dreams , always work hard at it. Be the first . At work in the morning and the last to leave at night Hard work creates opportunities where you can not create your resume .
3. Be persistent
When starting my company , I'd go downtown and buy cups of coffee. Then I would take the coffee to Merrill Lynch - our target group - and walk the hallways.
" Hello, " I would say. "I 'm Mike Bloomberg, and I gave you a cup of coffee. Can I talk to you? "
Even if people are wondering who I am or where I come from, yet they took the coffee.
And I kept coming back , day after day , working to build relationships with potential customers. I have learned what they could really use about the audience for our product and .
Three years after the launch of Bloomberg LP, bought Merrill Lynch 20 terminals and our first customer was.
4. Never stop learning
The world is full of people who have stopped learning and think they have figured it out. You have no doubt some of them already met - and will make a lot more.
My favorite word is " No" They give you a million reasons why something can not be done or should not be done .
On they hear not , will not be deterred by them of it, and not become one of them. Not if you want to fulfill your potential - and not if you want to change the world for the better.
5. Give back
At the end of the day , ask yourself : "Am I making a difference in the lives of others?"
My first donation was a $ 5 check at my alma mater , Johns Hopkins , not long after I graduated . I was just scraping by then, but I continue to give . And while the controls can be larger , they come with the same spirit . You do not have to give rich to be back . You can , by engaging and by giving your time and talents back . You just have to open doors for others involved .
